Let’s be real. We’ve all said this to ourselves at one point or another. We keep embracing positivity and let go of negativity, or at least we try our best. But while these sentiments are uplifting, putting them into practice can be a daunting task, especially in the mad times we live in. We get it!
Staying positive isn’t always easy, especially when life feels overwhelming. Often, the harder we chase positivity, the more elusive it becomes. However, with persistence, the rewards are profound. Positive thinking isn’t just about feeling good—it can genuinely transform your life.

How I Practice Positive Thinking (As a PhD Graduate)
Building a positive mindset takes effort and consistency. Here are some practical steps that you may want to follow to incorporate positivity into your life:
1. Cultivate Gratitude
Take a moment each day to reflect on the things you’re thankful for. Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life. Journalling worked for me, tremendously. Try that, one day at a time.
2. Practice Affirmations
Repeat positive affirmations to yourself daily. For example, “I am capable,” “I deserve happiness,” or “I can overcome any challenge.” Write that on your wall or put it on your phone wallpaper, even if it sounds stupid. If you keep affirming the same thing time and again, it becomes your reality. While doing my Ph.D., it’s been a rollercoaster for me, both mentally and physically. The affirmation that worked for me was: “Remember why you started. You didn’t come all this way to only get to where you are right now.”
3. Surround Yourself with Positivity
Your circle is the most important. I don’t know how to stress on this enough but cut off negative people off your life, instantly. If someone is jealous of your growth, or present even some sort of negativity in your life, trust me, you don’t need them .Spend time with people who uplift and inspire you. Avoid those who drain your energy or reinforce negativity. And remember, you become an average of your closest 5 people, so choose them carefully.
4. Focus on Solutions
When faced with challenges, shift your focus from problems to solutions. It’s about a mindset and a series of conscious decisions that you need to take every single day. This proactive approach empowers you and reduces feelings of helplessness.
5. Limit Negative Influences
Again, any other sort of negativity needs to go out. Reduce exposure to negativity in the form of social media, news, or toxic relationships. Replace these with sources of inspiration and motivation.
6. Visualize Success
Create a mental image of the life you want. Make that vision board you always wanted to. Most of the times, what you can visualise, you can achieve. Visualization can motivate you to take actionable steps toward your goals. No matter what it is.
7. Practice Mindfulness
Engage in mindfulness activities such as meditation or deep breathing to stay present and calm. This again, is said too often and followed way too less. I didn’t know how to practice mindfulness at all until I did. It doesn’t always have a to be the conventional meditation or other sorts of therapy. It could just be an hour of painting, or anything that makes you feel the most present!
8. Reframe Negative Thoughts
Challenge negative thoughts by questioning their validity. Replace them with positive, constructive alternatives.

Despite its benefits, staying positive isn’t always easy. Life’s challenges, personal setbacks, and external pressures can make it difficult to maintain an optimistic outlook. Here are common challenges and how to overcome them:
